Talented Timon asked if we could help with lessons to allow him to progress on the Double Bass. In his words (well worth reading on!):
“Thanks to the grant I received from Music for All I was able to gain my Grade 7 Double Bass with distinction. This result will contribute to my music A level grade as well which I will take next summer. By achieving a high grade standard I was able to audition for and be selected to play double bass for the prestigious Cornwall Youth Orchestra (a full symphony orchestra) and perform in concert with them on three occasions. The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire spent a week rehearsing with us and coaching us at a residential workshop over Easter and their music scouts subsequently invited me to a consultation with them with a view to securing a scholarship once I have finished my A levels.
The grant has helped to unlock this opportunity by raising my playing profile and confidence in an orchestra setting. I have played in small ensembles at school and jazz bands outside of school so this was a significant opportunity and experience in my musical journey. I gave a solo performance at the School Mayday concert for parents. This was the first time a double bass solo had ever been performed at the school and the Director of Music was delighted that I could do this at a high level of playing competence.
Coming from a low income family this grant has made a significant difference to my inclusion in progression on a minority instrument and I am very grateful for this”.
