I started my musical career on the washboard and believe it or not within five years I was playing drums with Adam Faith at a Royal Variety Performance in front of Her Majesty. I realise that sounds ridiculous but it’s how things were in those days. But to put it into perspective what would have happened if I hadn’t had that washboard and the Henrit family hadn’t managed to stretch their budget to help me out with my first drum kit?
I realise that without the washboard I wouldn’t have got anywhere and without instruments and a certain amount of tuition and perhaps a little help from ‘Music for All’ many of today’s kids (and even grownups) are going to find it really difficult to get started in music.
Of course we need your money to help with that tuition but we also need any instruments which are gathering dust in your attics. But there’s more: like us we also need you to take an interest in music itself. This is the reason any musician took up an instrument in the first place. Despite what many influential people may have you believe, we didn’t necessarily get into music to make money – we got into it to make music!Bob Henrit
